Book Review: “The strange and beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender” by Leslye Walton

My first thought after finishing this read: “What the f$ck did I just read?”

I am still unsure what the point of this story is supposed to be.

To start things off, you could think that this story is about Ava Lavender but out of the 300 pages in this book, the first 120 pages are telling the story of her ancestors, going as far as her great-grandfather. After those 120 pages, Ava is only born, so we don’t get to see her as a developed, adult character until later on. Considering her name is in the title and it is her that is born with a set of wings, I wish more focus was directed towards Ava, it just didn’t feel as if she was the protagonist.

It is a very confusing and hard read overall. There was too much narrative and too little dialogues, it made it feel dragged out. The story had certain, let’s say dark, undertones, but nothing too harsh. However, during certain moments and by the end of the novel, the descriptions of events that took place were really gruesome and out of nowhere, really. I felt as if some of them were uncalled for, I was taken aback by them as I simply didn’t except them in such a story and more sensitive readers may not handle it well.

I have no idea what was going on with the secondary characters, there were so many of them it was hard to keep up, some were just plain stupid… That said, some stories just didn’t make sense, even though it is a fantasy book.

I also found the ending to be disappointing to say the least. After everything Ava has been through, it didn’t seem like it made up for anything, which I felt the author was going towards.

I do not recommend this book. I do not know how the hell does it has such good reviews online. I read worse books but at the same time, this read just annoyed me.

If you’ve read it, I hope you had better experience with it that me, let me know down in the comment section!

Thanks for reading this review and until next time, Dream On, Dreamers!
